There’s been a lot of talk among dog owners lately about something called a “Belly Band”. In this article you’ll learn what they are, if you need one and how they’re made. First though, here are some questions that will help you find out if you need one:
- Does your male dog continually lift his leg on your furniture or whatever corner smells good to him?
- Does he keep going to the same spot on your carpet no matter how thoroughly you have cleaned it?
- Is he incontinent or just unable to hold it through the night?
If you answered yes to any of those questions then the Belly Band could be the solution!
What is a Belly Band?
Belly bands are designed to wrap around a male dog’s body and cover his penis. It is a physical barrier between his urine and your furniture. A belly band is in fact a dog diaper, but it’s much more comfortable for your dog and much less cumbersome for you.
Belly Bands are made of a thick absorbent type of fabric, such as flannelette. Inside, there is a self adhesive feminine pad or a incontinence pad. They are wrapped around the dog and fastened by means of a velcro strip sewn at each end of the wrap. Usually a good fitting belly wrap requires no elastic and will stay in place quite well.
Many Belly Bands use a “waterproof liner” because it traps the urine inside the band up against the dogs skin and fur. This can easily burn the skin and stain the dogs hair. The waterproof barrier will also hold heat in and become uncomfortable for your dog. The ladies incontinent pads (or feminine pad) will pull the urine away from the dog’s skin and has a urine odor absorber to keep your dog from smelling like urine.
Why would I use one?
Often a male dog will mark its territory in the house or even worse when you go visiting he marks inside someone else’s house. This can be quite embarrassing to say the least and it’s this type of problem the Belly Band can solve.
A Belly Band will not stop your dog from trying to mark its territory inside your house but it will save your furniture, carpets and floors from the damage of dog urine. It will also save you a lot of the frustration of cleaning up. Plus, the Belly Band is (or should be) machine washable, so you can reuse them.
Older dogs often become incontinent and a belly band is an excellent method to prevent urine dribbles on your floor and carpet.
Where do I get a Belly Band?
If you know your way around a sewing machine, you can make your own belly band. All you need are your dog’s measurements around his tummy area, some flannel fabric and some wide velcro strips. You can also find Belly Bands now at pet stores and online.
There are, of course, other ways to prevent dog urine in your house, but most dog owners like their dogs to be with them. Additionally some owners have dogs that have lived their whole life inside and through age, have become incontinent. For them, the belly band would be an excellent way to keep their best friend where he needs to be– with them.
